It started did it not with out sourcing in-house services such as cleaning (?) They wonder why there are so many bugs around now such as MRSA .... Contract cleaners have no sense of ownership or pride to their job and will not go that extra mile to make sure a hospital ward is sparkling clean, hygenic. Privatisation is an outrage and symptomatic of a lazy hands off style of government.

At the same time our taxes increase but where does the money go; £4billion for 2 aircraft carriers for example. The UK has to stop prancing around the world trying to punch above its weight. It's costing this country too much and diverting funds from other essential services such as the NHS.

Stupid government.

Happy birthday NHS! :)

"Privatisation will be the death of the NHS"

Jose, that's exactly what it will do. The politicians assure us that it will always be free at the point of use but charges may well start to creep in with all the private companies whose first priority is to their shareholders.

Missy Midwife!! How clever are you?? Well done! That is the best story I've heard in ages. You are truly honoured. I would love to do midwifery. Although there's a lot more to it than delivering babies.

Hey, Earthie, I helped deliver a baby last night!

My neighbour's hubby asked me to go up to the house to mind their 2year old, as they were waiting for the ambulance to take her to hospital. I put on E's dressing gown and legged it up to her house, by which time the mum was on the stairs and the baby was coming!

Ten minutes later, out popped a baby boy!

Who needs the NHS?

Timely post for me, Earthpal. I have been watching closely how the system works. What was once a splendid service to ALL residents is becoming little by little unbearable. Waiting lists pile names for semesters even years and believe me, of people needing an urgent attention. My case was to be one of them. Due to a progressive failure in my heart functions I was assigned by my cardiologist to be the user of a "halter", a device meant to control my heart for 24 hours, as you without doubt know. If I had accepted what they told me I still would be waiting - until January 2009 - for this little machine, the cost of which must be minimal in relation to the cost of other big mchines in the NHS. I protested through the cardiologist and was given the halter right away. The problem with the acquisition of these devices lies with the lack of staff to control them.

Privatisation will be the death of the NHS. I have been able to observe that those patients who are cared in private clinics not only do not receive the same attention as the paying ones but also get the poorest of the attentions if they are lucky enough to get it without a prior demand.

And as lots of people take the streets to protest for what happens somewhere else in the world, they forget they have also to take them to protest for the rights they are about to lose in their own country, the most important of which being the service having to do with our health, our most precious asset.

Ooh Zeddie, men with hairy chests most certainly do it for me. The B.I.L is very hairy all over but he is also an utter bore when it comes to conversation! Suicidal thoughts have been known to enter many a person's head when stuck with him in a corner at a party.

Hirsutism . . . well women spend lot's of money on hair removal product and I know women who are all too conscious of unwanted facial hair. I don't have that problem (MissyL, DO NOT mention my moustache or will have to kill you) but I feel for women who suffer terribly with their body image due to excessive unwanted hair.

As for the hidden hairy parts, I'm a bit of a hypocrite because I don't much like the au-naturelle look so every six weeks or so, some delicate waxing has to be endured. Ouch!!

So do you girls not like men with hairy chests then? When did that go out? It used to be all the rage in the 70s.

What about women? You´re a hippy EP - where do you stand on the hirsute female debate?

By the way, I´m not convinced this story is true.
