This Saturday at 8.30pm it’s Earth Hour.
Towns, cities, businesses and households alike are signing up. Last year, even Google took part. We might as well take part too and get a taster of the Dark Age that is a-coming.
Just look at it as the hour you’re going to lose when we put the clocks forward. Yes, I know that doesn’t add up but don’t let the pesky details deter you.
As individuals, it will take no effort. It could be fun. Just get out the candles and have a lovely, candlelit evening. If you have kids, get the board games out. Last year, me and my brood played Monopoly by candle-light. I hate Monopoly. This year I’m thinking we might play hide-and-seek in the dark. Could be interesting.
One hour isn’t going to solve the climate problem and some would argue that it’s nothing more than a gimmick, but it will raise awareness and perhaps it will encourage us to have more lights out hours.
Interestingly (for me anyway), WWF who organised the event, have a poll running on their site which asks who your ideal Earth Hour candle-light dinner date would be. Unsurprisingly, Johnny Depp came tops. Well they’d have to fight me off first.
Anyhoo, don’t forget to switch off at 8.30. It won’t hurt. Honest.
