What WED?

June the 5th was World Environment Day.  WED was started in 1972 by the UN to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action.

Oh.

Oops.

I missed it.

Call myself a green blogger!  Too busy following the Euro-elections and watching the expenses scandal unravel. I just can’t resist the gossip.

Anyway, I’ll sneak a quick post in and hope that no-one notices the date.  These are the four core principles of the organisation:

  1. Give a human face to environmental issues;
  2. Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;
  3. Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
  4. Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

Fair points there.  This year, the theme is Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change and the host nation was Mexico which is where swine flu emerged from.

And for more delightful WED reading, here is the WED alphabet.  They couldn’t think of anything beginning with X pertaining to the environment so they cheated.

  1. Mexico was where the swine flu – that hoax concocted to keep us on tenterhooks I am convinced – emerged but let’s not forget that the origin was an American corporation’s factory and its processing of pig meat.

    Why when we talk of calamities the adjective American must always be present?

  2. Yes, swine-flu. Mexico was bigging it up initially until it looked like it might affect their tourism industry.
