How sad is this . . . Sir David Attenborough receives hate mail for not crediting God in his nature documentaries. He said in a Radio Times interview that they tell him to burn-in-hell and good riddance. I guess, as hate mail goes, it’s not really all that chilling. In fact it’s rather lame. Is it the best they can come up with?
Still, nasty anyway . . and not very much in keeping with the teachings of Jesus. Nothing new there then.
I rarely use the ‘Sir’ word because I don’t usually believe it’s deserved but in this case, I most definitely do. I have the greatest admiration for Sir David. In fact, he goes off the scales on my respect-o-meter. His natural history programmes and nature documentaries have never failed and I have nothing but gratitude and affection for the guy. His knowledge of the natural world is huge and for years and years he has been passing on this knowledge to the viewing public, teaching us about all the wonderful ways of nature. His production teams have brought us many beautiful and awesome images of the natural world and importantly, David always tries to include a message about the human impact on nature. And unlike the now deceased Steve Irwin, Sir David never torments or teases any creatures for the sake of entertainment. When making his films, he always, always treats them and the natural world with respect, dignity and affection. And as such, David himself deserves to be treated likewise.
I’m just glad that he is big enough and self-assured enough to rise above the silly little letters from those superstitious believers in nasty evil gods who will condemn us to burn in hell-fire if we don’t worship them.

The future of life on earth depends on our ability to take action. Many individuals are doing what they can, but real success can only come if there’s a change in our societies and our economics and in our politics. I’ve been lucky in my lifetime to see some of the greatest spectacles that the natural world has to offer. Surely we have a responsibility to leave for future generations a planet that is healthy, inhabitable by all species.
